The angel, Gabriel, appears to a teenage girl Mary, who is betrothed to Joseph. He brings her an incredible message of the favour of God not just towards her but to the whole human race. The announcement speaks of God’s initiative, his absolute commitment to fulfil his promises and his power to do things that only he can do. Gabriel’s message brought hope to Mary and has been bringing hope to the whole world ever since. May we respond in the same way Mary did: “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.”
