Some Words from Phil
Hi Everyone,
We had a great launch for the Redeemer North new venue on Sunday. Thanks to everyone who made it possible, and to those who joined us for the afternoon service, which was a wonderful celebration.
The long-awaited Sri Lanka mission is almost upon us. Leigh and I leave on Tuesday, the 19th of May. Our trip starts with a Genesis Collective team meeting. Chris Wienand will lead this time as we meet to discuss what God is doing around the world, and how we can serve our network of churches better. We are representing the Indian Ocean region and will give some feedback from Mauritius, Madagascar, and Seychelles.
After that, a few more leaders will join as part of their development and growth. Jotty, from Seychelles, will be there, as well as some friends from Red. Point Church in Durban. These sessions will be aimed more at equipping us all to minister and help other churches.
Finally, we have the Genesis Collective Conference in Negombo, attended by pastors and leaders from India and Sri Lanka. The rest of the Redeemer team will join us there. We will be worshipping together, praying together and being encouraged through the scriptures. At the end of that time, we will be with the church plant in Negombo on Sunday, the 31st of May, where Jonas will lead worship, and I will preach.
Please pray for this time and for all the ministry. We would value that so much.
God bless, Phil
Elder's Corner: A Message from Jonas
Last Sunday, I had the privilege of bringing God’s Word to Redeemer South.
As we journey through the book of Psalms, we are reminded how deeply relatable these writings are. In every season of life — whether joyful, stressful, or marked by loss — we can find ourselves within the Psalms. Yet above it all, we are reminded that God remains sovereign, faithful, and just.
Preaching from Psalm 51 last week was also a powerful reminder of how quickly temptation can create room for sin to take root in our hearts. David, a man after God’s own heart, found himself broken by the reality of his sin — adultery and murder. In his despair, he cried out to God for mercy, asking for a clean heart and a contrite spirit. What is beautiful in this passage is not only David’s repentance, but the fact that he turned back to God with humility and surrender.
Today, through the grace we have received in Jesus Christ, we too have direct access to come before God in repentance, knowing that through Christ we can receive forgiveness and restoration. As 1 John 1:9 reminds us: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
May we never remain trapped in guilt or shame, but instead run to God with humble hearts, confident that He is faithful and just to forgive.
Blessings, Jonas
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
~ John 1:9 ~
Sri lanka Genesis collective
Phil and Leigh are currently in Sri Lanka for two weeks, as part of the Global Genesis Collective for 2026 and to minister into the surrounding community. Tim, Jonas, Cedric and Cheryl will be joining them as from next week.
Please keep the team from Redeemer in your prayers as they represent the Indian Ocean region, and sow into Sri Lanka and the Negombo church.
Last Sunday's Message
On Sunday, Phil continued our series on the book of Psalms – A Journey through the Psalms – with a message on Psalm 73.
This is a psalm that voices out loud the thoughts that many of us carry in private. They are questions about the fairness of life. About why the wicked prosper while good people often suffer harm. They are questions that can be filled with deep emotion: anger at injustice, feelings of revenge, like we want to take matters into our own hands, feelings of helplessness or despair, or maybe even feelings of giving up, just going with the flow and abandoning our Christian values because that seems to be the way things work. If you can’t beat them. Join them. But they are questions that God is willing to answer as he gives us a more spiritual view on life.
If you missed his message on Sunday, you can find it here or on our YouTube channel: Redeemer Church Mu. See you on Sunday for part 4.
As part of our Psalms series, we busy with a YouVersion Bible app reading plan called 28 Days in the Psalms. Click the button below if you’d like to join us for the reading plan.
A New Home for Redeemer North
We moved to Mauritius in 2018 and immediately joined Redeemer West, where we were welcomed into the church family with open arms. However, at the end of 2019, we moved to the North, but continued driving to the West for Sunday services. (The boys still call it the “far church.”) We visited a few churches in the North, but none of them really felt like home.
During COVID, we were spoiled by online services, which made us a little lazy about driving to the West, so once things reopened, we only went once or twice a month. Eventually, we decided it was time to ask Phil if there was any way to bring Redeemer to the North. Phil connected us with Shaun and Michelle, and Brian and Michelle, and after a few coffees and lunches, the Elders finally agreed to Redeemer in the North.
Our first official Redeemer North service was in May 2023 at Lighthouse School, and we held services once a month at various venues, including Labourdonnais, Café de la Presse, and Domaine Ambra. In 2024, the services increased to twice a month, and since January 2025, we have been meeting every Sunday at Domaine Ambra.
It has been a wonderful journey — though not always an easy one — especially when it came to finding a venue. Domaine Ambra really went out of their way to accommodate us. It was sad to say goodbye, but Redeemer North has grown, and Domaine Ambra simply became too small — a good problem to have.
This month, on the 10th of May 2026, we had our very first service in our new permanent venue in the MariDeal Building. We want to thank Dane and Taryn, and all of you who have walked this journey with Redeemer, and with us, for helping make this amazing place our new Redeemer North home.

Memorial service: Elmarie Roberts
It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our dear friend and Redeemer family member, Elmarie Roberts. Elmarie was a beautiful person whose warmth, faith, and gentle spirit impacted the lives of all those she met.
Please join us for a memorial service on Saturday as we celebrate Elmarie’s life.
Date: Saturday, 23 May
Time: 11:00
Location: Redeemer Church, Black River
Light refreshments will be served after the service, and all are welcome to stay for a time of fellowship and support.
Please continue to keep Johan and the entire family in your prayers during this difficult time. We kindly ask everyone to please respect the family’s privacy at this time as they walk through this season of loss.

Coming Up at Redeemer
Mother's Day Community Project
This Mother’s Day, we would love to bless the mothers in the communities that Redeemer church is involved in. We invite you to buy a gift of around Rs500 for a mom in the community.
Please wrap your gift nicely and include an encouraging card or message. A few kind words can make a big difference, so take a moment to remind a mom that she is seen, valued, loved, and appreciated.
Please ensure you drop your gift off at church (West, North or South) by the 26th of May.
Thank you for helping us share God’s love in a practical and meaningful way this Mother’s Day.
